xisting studies point to relationships between child abuse and crime perpetration in adulthood. We also know that child abuse and trauma are strongly connected to mental health. In this study, the relationship between child abuse and neglect, OP, lead poisoning, and involvement in serious offenses including murder and homicide, prior to adulthood was completed. This study explored the links between prevalence of child abuse and neglect, out of home placement, and child lead poisoning and arrest for serious offenses before adulthood. Findings showed that prevalence of abuse and neglect significantly predicted prevalence of arrest for violent and serious crimes. OP did not have a significant relationship with arrest for serious and violent crimes. Prevalence of lead poisoning exposure was not significantly associated with prevalence of arrested for serious crime. Implications on child protection, mental health, and social work education are discussed.

Objective The relationship between psychosis and violence is often construed focusing on a narrow panel of factors; however, recent evidence suggests violence might be linked to a complex interplay of biopsychosocial factors among forensic psychiatric patients with psychosis (FPPP). This review describes violence incidents in FPPP, the factors associated with violence, and relevant implications. Methods This review was conducted following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guideline. Databases, including CINAHL, EMBASE, Medline/PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Science, were searched for eligible studies that examined violence among adult FPPP. Screening of reports and data extraction were completed by at least two independent reviewers. Results Across the 29 included studies, violence was consistently related to prior contact with psychiatric services, active psychotic symptoms, impulsivity, adverse experiences, and low social support. However, FPPP who reported violence varied in most other biopsychosocial domains, suggesting the underlying combinatorial effects of multiple risk factors for violence rather than individual factors. Variability in violence was addressed by stratifying FPPP into subgroups using composite/aggregate of identifiable factors (including gender, onset/course of illness, system-related, and other biopsychosocial factors) to identify FPPP with similar risk profiles. Conclusions There are multiple explanatory pathways to violence in FPPP. Recent studies identify subgroups with underlying similarities or risk profiles for violence. There is a need for future prospective studies to replicate the clinical utility of stratifying FPPP into subgroups and integrate emerging evidence using recent advancements in technology and data mining to improve risk assessment, prediction, and management.

The aim of the present study was to provide a forensic psychiatric characterization of perpetrators of parricide who were found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). We conducted a study involving 52 NGRI patients who had committed homicide or attempted homicide within the Department of Forensic Psychiatry in Thessaloniki, Greece, between January 2015 and 2020. Subjects were categorized into two groups: parricide ( n = 21) and a control group ( n = 31). Our findings revealed that in the parricide group, the majority of patients were unmarried males in their thirties, with a history of prior contact with mental health services and nonadherence to treatment. Additionally, they had a background of substance abuse and exhibited violent behavior before the index crime. A notable trend observed among parricide offenders was the tendency to seek hospitalization, possibly as a means of distancing themselves from stressful family environments, based on information obtained in the interviews conducted as a part of this research. All instances of parricide involved the use of sharp weapons, and the crimes were consistently committed in private settings. Symptomatology among parricide patients was assessed as moderate to severe, with a significant long-term risk observed following the crime. The primary differences identified between the two groups were the higher pre-crime voluntary admissions and the elevated estimated postcrime risk observed in the parricide group. Early intervention, comprehensive assessment of risk factors, family support, and assistance in resolving conflicts and reintegrating patients into society are emphasized as critical interventions that can potentially prevent future tragedies.
