Psychosocial, psychiatric and work-related risk factors associated with suicide in Ireland: optimised methodological approach of a case-control psychological autopsy study

Abstract: Background: Suicide has profound effects on families and communities, but is a statistically rare event. Psychological autopsies using a case-control design allow researchers to examine risk factors for suicide, using a variety of sources to detail the psychological and social characteristics of decedents and to compare them to controls. The Suicide Support and Information System Case Control study (SSIS-ACE) aimed to compare psychosocial, psychiatric and work-related risk factors across three groups of subjec… Show more

“…Most studies on suicide attempts or reattempts have focused on risk factors ( Arensman et al, 2019 ; Sher, 2019a ) rather than on the protective variables that can minimize suicide reattempt ( Larkin et al, 2014 ; Sánchez-Teruel et al, 2020 ). Interestingly, there is a significant proportion of people who, after the first attempt, do not make another suicide attempt, not even in adverse situations ( Deuter et al, 2020 ).…”

“… 38 Recently, Arensman and colleagues have described an optimized methodological approach to a PA that allows for investigating a range of risk and protective factors for suicide whilst also examining consistency across various information sources. 39 …”

“…High-risk self-harm: (a) highly lethal self-harm presentations, and/or (b) presentations with high levels of suicidal intent. The same criteria used by Arensman et al [18,26] will be used to define high-risk self-harm, which is a combination of a highly lethal methods, medical severity and clinical impression of high suicide intent (See Additional File 1).…”
