Psychotherapeutic Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background: The aim of the study was a systematic review of studies evaluating psychotherapeutic treatment approaches in anorexia nervosa and to compare their efficacy. Weight gain was chosen as the primary outcome criterion. We also aimed to compare treatment effects according to service level (inpatient vs. outpatient) and age group (adolescents vs. adults). Methods:The data bases PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Cinahl, and PsychInfo were used for a systematic literature search (until Feb 2017). “…The main finding of not being able to establish differences between psychological treatment and control conditions with regard to weight gain and/or eating disorder pathology is in line with previous studies (Hay, Claudino, Smith, et al, ; Zeeck et al, ). Adding recent, large RCTs, as we did in this meta‐analysis, did not result in a different finding.…”

“…With the increase of recent RCTs run with newly developed psychological treatments and significantly larger sample sizes (Byrne et al, ), examining the effects by conducting an up‐to‐date meta‐analysis including the most recent studies is sensible. This meta‐analysis, in contrast to other recent meta‐analyses (Murray, Quintana, Loeb, Griffiths, & Le Grange, ; Zeeck et al, ) includes end‐of‐treatment outcome measures on weight gain, eating disorder pathology, and on QoL. In addition, this study includes a 2017 large RCT (Byrne, 2017).…”

“…There are several small trials now of secondgeneration antipsychotics, such as olanzapine for anorexia nervosa with mixed results. 14 There are several trials supporting agents for the treatment of BED and bulimia nervosa. 20 However, the rate of weight gain was very small (approximately 0.7 kg/month) and negligible with placebo.…”

“…Treatment trials of adults with anorexia nervosa include a substantial proportion with a prolonged period of untreated illness. It could be argued that the findings from these studies have led to “therapeutic stagnation.” For example, no superiority of a specific psychological approach has been observed for adults with anorexia nervosa (Grenon et al, ; Zeeck et al, ). In addition, all produce only moderate sized effects.…”
