Psychotherapy in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Abstract: Al-Sohaibani et al [1], they cite a 30% incidence of granulomas with a Ziehl-Neelsenpositivity in only 10% of 300 patients. That leaves a large number of cases in which no additional comments were made with reference to the findings. Is there any additional information with reference to this?

“…Several explanations may bear out. As with other non-Western populations (Al-Krenawi, 1999; Al-Krenawi & Graham, 1999a;Fabrega, 1991; Minuchin-Itzigshon et al 19~4; Sue & Zane, 1987;West, 1987), it is probable that the stigma of psychiatric treatment may dissuade Jordanians from seeking and receiving professional care (Savaya, 1995(Savaya, , 1998 earlier in their lives. In non-~Iestcrn cultures, stigma attached to mental health services may be influenced by moral issues in defining problems, the belief that traditional practices are effective, and the perception of incompetence attached to individuals who request outside assistance (Ibrahim & Alnafie, 1991;Soliman, 1999).…”

“…Patients do not expect psychiatrists to undertake any form of talking therapy, other than what is related to prescribing medications or giving physical examinations (Al-Krenawi and Graham, 1999a;Ibrahim and Ibrahim, 1993;Kulwicki, 1996;West, 1987). Similarly, patients expect psychiatrists to treat the body somatically and to provide cures for physical symptoms within a short time, and are consequently disappointed when this does not occur Kulwicki, 1996).…”

“…This perspective may be reinforced by a community or family context that is collective. Individual responsibility for behaviour is less perceived in isolation of others within the community (Al-Krenawi, 1999bBazzoui, 1970;West, 1987).…”

“…Referring to the situation in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, West (1987) suggested that the Islamic influence on Arab psychology is revealed in the conviction that the future is in the hands of Allah. Many patients believe that the therapist is hakeem (wise man and healer), through whom Allah works.…”
