Based upon the authors' long experience and upon a literature review, this paper presents an assessment regarding up-to-date R&D activities related to development and application of liquid phase catalytic exchange (LPCE) technology for tritium separation from tritiated water, produced in fission and fusion nuclear reactors. The assessment is focused on key elements of the LPCE process, mixed catalytic packing and as a result of the assessment, few recommendations for selecting the most suitable mixed catalytic packing are given. A new improved mixed catalytic packing (COMPACK C-P 001) was manufactured and proposed to be used in the future Tritium Removal Facility from Cernavoda CANDU NPP (Romania).

A procedure for wet‐proofing Pt/silicalite catalysts with polytetrafluoroethylene fibres is described. The procedure yielded catalysts with stable and high activities for the exchange of hydrogen isotopes between liquid water and hydrogen gas. Characterization of the catalysts by hydrogen chemisorption and scanning electron microscopy showed that the wet‐proofing procedure can produce catalysts in which most of the Pt surface in the Pt/silicalite before wet‐proofing can remain accessible. Hydrogen chemisorption was found to be a valuable tool for prescreening of wet‐proofed catalysts.

The catalytic exchange of hydrogen isotopes is a promising technology for purifying recycled water in nuclear power stations. However, it remains a challenge for achieving high catalytic efficiency and stability at low temperatures. In this work, we propose a facile strategy to enhance the catalyst efficiency by introducing LiF in the Pt/Ti3AlC2 (Pt‐5‐LiF/Ti3AlC2). The incorporation of LiF significantly achieves high catalytic exchange efficiency of 92% and a turnover frequency of 28.1 h‐1, which are more than twice that of Pt/Ti3AlC2. The structure‐activity relationship analysis reveals that the introduction of LiF substantially enhanced the hydrogen adsorption capacity of the catalyst and further improved the performance of the catalysts. Moreover, this LiF‐added strategy is also applicable to other Pt‐based catalysts such as Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/activated carbon. This work provides a novel catalyst design strategy for high‐efficiency catalytic exchange of hydrogen isotopes.
