PTSD Symptoms Mediate the Relationship Between Sexual Abuse and Substance Use Risk in Juvenile Justice–Involved Youth

Abstract: Juvenile justice-involved youth face disproportionate rates of sexual abuse, which increases the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs), both of which are associated with poor long-term outcomes. The present study tested two mediation and moderation models, controlling for age, race, and history of physical abuse, with gender as a moderator, to determine whether PTSD symptoms serve as a risk factor and/or mechanism in the relationship between sexual abuse and substance… Show more

“…According to studies by Ai et al (2016) and Sanders et al (2018) , it is common for individuals who have experienced childhood traumas to use drugs as a form of coping mechanism. These findings are consistent with the results from the current study, where participants explained they had used drugs to calm their minds and experience relaxation without having to ruminate on distressing thoughts.…”

“…Another potential mediator could be PTSD, but this variable does not exist in Ecuador I survey data. For example, PTSD symptoms mediate the relationship between sexual abuse and substance abuse risk in youth, suggesting the viability of targeting PTSD as a modifiable risk factor to reduce the effects of sexual abuse on substance abuse (Sanders et al, 2018). Thus, knowing the mechanisms or causes of the problems, generally, are intended to take reparative or preventive measures, as appropriate.…”

“…Fourth, we did not include measures of posttraumatic stress (PTS) given our decision to focus on the syndrome subscales most commonly used in CWS contexts (Heflinger, Simpkins, & Combs-Orme, 2000). However, given the high prevalence of trauma in this population (Kisiel, Fehrenbach, Small, & Lyons, 2009), and the close relation between PTS and SU in adolescence (Sanders et al, 2018), future studies could examine if a targeted PTS assessment incrementally leads to better predictions concerning SU risk.…”
