Puberty onset curve in CD (Sprague Dawley) and Long Evans outbred male rats

Abstract: The exact timing of puberty is fundamental in preclinical studies. In male rats, the age at sexual maturity varies considerably between 40 and 60 days of age. Here, we summarize pubertal onset evaluation of two outbred rat strains (Crl:CD(SD) and Crl:LE), relying on the balano-preputial separation test. Evaluation was carried out on animals under standard barrier conditions, from four to nine weeks of age. In the Crl:CD(SD) population, 90% of males gained puberty at week 6, and 100% in the following weeks, whe… Show more

“…In the present study, the ovariectomy and castration surgery were performed at 8 weeks of age, at which time rats had reached puberty and had been exposed to sex hormones [38][39][40]. It is unknown whether the initial exposure to sex hormones modifies the regulation of monocarboxylate transporters, and further if these alterations are reversable after removing the endogenous sex hormones.…”

“…Male and female rats underwent a behavioral test battery for naturalistic rewards during peripuberty (PND 28–38) or adolescence (PND 44–54). In this study, peripuberty refers to the period of time from PND 28–42, which is thought to cover the equivalent of “childhood” (P28–P30) and around puberty onset (P34–P42) in the rat (Marquez et al., 2013; Tzanoulinou, Garcia‐Mompo et al., 2014; Tzanoulinou, Riccio et al., 2014), with most female Sprague‐Dawley rats exhibiting puberty (as indexed by vaginal opening) around PND 35–38 (Rivest, 1991) and most male Sprague‐Dawley rats (∼90%) exhibiting puberty (as indexed by balano‐preputial separation) around PND 42 (Fuochi et al., 2022). We use adolescence to refer to animals that are postpubertal but have not reached adulthood (∼P60).…”

“…The co-exposed group was orally given both IPD and CPS at the same aforementioned doses (1/20 LD 50 ) and route. All treatments were given until the onset of puberty at the 60th day PND [ 47 ]. Weekly body weights of all rats were recorded and used to calibrate dosage volumes.…”
