Public-Academic Partnerships: Improving Care for Older Persons With Schizophrenia Through an Academic-Community Partnership

Abstract: Translating evidence-based mental health interventions designed in research settings into community practice is a priority for multiple stakeholders. Partnerships between academic and public institutions can facilitate this translation. To improve care for middle-aged and older adults with schizophrenia, the authors developed a collaboration between a university research center and a public mental health service system using principles from community-based participatory research and cultural exchange theory. “…Although the literature describes a number of active highly structured ASPs and some indications are given that these ASPs are supported by management structures and a budgetary framework (Dluhy et al, 2007;Fielden et al, 2007;Humphreys et al, 2004;Lindamer et al, 2008;MacPhee, 2009), we did not find any detailed description on how financial frameworks of ASPs have been developed and implemented in the literature. The goal of this paper is therefore to describe the financial framework for budgetary planning of two ASPs in two different healthcare systems, that is, Switzerland and the US.…”

“…Obtaining access to care settings is crucial for researchers. A collaboration characterized by equality between research and service partners is a condition sine qua non for all aspects of scientific inquiry but may be most relevant for translational research and practice development (Lindamer et al, 2008). More resources and energy need to be invested in these initiatives in the future to truly create innovative practice environments in health care.…”

“…delivery is suitable for most if not all patients (Britto et al, 2007;Hartmann et al, 2007), ample evidence exists to support tailoring services to specific subpopulations, such as hard-to-reach groups or populations with specific health conditions and the consideration of the context and partners within communities in order to improve and ensure appropriate delivery of services (Cunningham et al, 2007;Lindamer et al, 2008;Margolis et al, 2001;Vlahov, Coady, Ompad, & Galea, 2007). In recognition of these challenges, in 1992, an Inner City Health (ICH) program was introduced at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada, to help meet the diverse needs of the populations it served.…”
