Background: This study explored the effect of public health nurses’ current community care nursing competency on the psychological and organizational empowerment of public health services in Taiwan.Method: A cross-sectional survey design and a self-developed structured questionnaire were administered to Taiwanese public health nurses, recruited using a purposive sampling technique, who participated in community health care workshops offered by Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2019.Results: The majority of subjects were aged between 40 and 49 years and reported working in public health for over 10 years. Furthermore, 89.30% of the subjects worked in a Public Health Center. The mean score of Community Care Nursing Competence (CCNC) was 3.92 ± 0.83 (measured using a five-point Likert scale). The mean score in Community Empowerment (CE) was 3.66 ± 0.90, between “Neutral” and “Agree.” The CCNC was positively correlated with the workplace. The CE was positively correlated with age. The CCNC was positively correlated with psychological and organizational empowerment. The stepwise regression revealed that age (B = 0.18, p = .021) and communication competence (B = 0.17, p = .002) positively predicted community empowerment. Conclusions: The study revealed that age and communication competence were crucial factors in public health nurses working in the community. With age and through the accumulation of practical experience, Taiwanese public health nurses’ communication competence may also improve, which can further enhance their psychological and organizational empowerment in the nursing workplace.

Changes in the delivery of community/public health (C/PH) nursing have challenged nursing educators to seek innovative ways to ensure that their educational programs produce competent entry-level practitioners. This article describes how public health professionals and faculty from eight regional colleges and universities in Southeastern Wisconsin came together to better understand both what C/PH nursing content was being taught in the region, and the extent to which that content was aligned with the Public Health Nurse Competencies defined by the Quad Council in 2004. Based on self-reporting by nursing school faculty as well as a separate mapping of course objectives into the competency areas, the project found that the curricula of the participating colleges and universities adequately addressed most of the competencies in the Quad Council domains one through six. Competencies in domains seven (financial planning/management skills) and eight (leadership/systems thinking skills) were not, however, adequately addressed and plans were subsequently developed to fill those gaps. In addition to helping each institution identify strengths and gaps in its own curriculum, the project provided an unprecedented opportunity for both public health professionals and academics to build relationships, share best practices, and exchange resources.

Background:A serious challenge to educate health staff for public health is to appear encouraging enough to persuade them for learning issues on this field and implementing new educational methods and innovative ways. Iran International Public Health Summer School (IPHS) made an effort to provide medical sciences students with a fortune to get familiar with and involved in public health. This study intended to evaluate the efficacy of this event.Materials and Methods:This cross-sectional study was performed in March–April 2015 by the help of an electronic self-administered questionnaire filled out by 49 Iranian participants 6 months after IPHS2014. The questionnaire assessed the main goals in seven main domains: Interest, activities, and general knowledge in the field of public health, general skills, educational methods, educational and executive schedules, and general satisfaction.Results:Average scores of all domains were >3 (the mean), and all were statistically significant. The highest average score belonged to educational methods (3.92) and the lowest was calculated for the item regarding participants’ activities on public health (3.5). No significant difference was found between positive answers of individuals who were interested or active in public health prior to the event and those who had no background.Conclusions:We believe IPHS was a unique instance in Public Health Education in Iran. Considering the level of success of this program to reach its goals for both students’ with or without any previous background on public health, it is recommended as a general model to be simulated in other developing countries.
