Pulmonary embolism and tuberculosis

Abstract: Tuberculosis has a high prevalence in Tunisia, but pulmonary embolism is rarely reported in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We describe 3 cases of pulmonary embolism associated with severe pulmonary tuberculosis. Pulmonary embolism occurred within 2 to 13 days of pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis. Clinical, bacteriological, and radiological evolutions were noted within 6 months for pulmonary tuberculosis, but controlling the international normalized ratio was difficult in 2 cases, and low-molecular-weight… Show more

“…Thromboembolic events are well known to occur during SARS-CoV-2 infection and may be attributed to the microangiopathic changes [19] . Like COVID-19, two other prevalent diseases in Africa, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) [20] and Tuberculosis [ 21 , 22 ] can independently trigger venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism. Thus HCWs in Africa must maintain a high level of awareness for the possibility of thromboembolism during this era of COVID-19.…”

“…During the management of venous thromboembolism in patients with tuberculosis, the enzyme-inducing property of rifampicin which is used as the first line of therapy causes a challenge in attaining therapeutic anticoagulation while using warfarin [10]. Patients often require a higher dose of warfarin as in our patient and prolonged duration of heparin till a therapeutic level of INR is attained.…”
