Pulmonary Function Abnormalities in Regard to Age at the Time of Diagnosis of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis

Abstract: Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a complex syndrome caused by exaggerated immune response to inhalation of a variety of organic particles in susceptible individuals. In this study we assessed the relationship between age at the time of diagnosis and the degree of functional and radiological changes in HP. The diagnosis of HP was made on the basis of a combination of clinical symptoms, medical history, serological tests, radiologic evidence of diffuse lung disease, and absence of other identifiable causes o… Show more

“…However, a combined obstructive/restrictive functional pattern may be observed in some patients, as HP may affect the small airways. An early reduction in DLCO can often be found 22 . While a mild decrease in FEV1, FVC, and diffusion was found in the mean respiratory function tests of the patients in our study, the FEV1/FVC ratio was found to be normal.…”

“…Chronic HP can be more difficult to diagnose. PFT most often shows decreased diffusion capacity and a restrictive pattern, but a minority, including never smokers, experience obstruction,[ 5 ] as in case I. The exposure history in chronic HP may be subtle, and in many cases no eliciting antigen can be identified.…”
