Pulmonary function between 6 and 18 years of age

Abstract: Pulmonary function of children aged 6-18 years is described based on 82,462 annual measurements of forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expired volume in 1 second (FEV1), and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (FEF25-75%) from 11,630 white children and 989 black children. Median height, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25-75% for each 3 months of age are compared among race and sex subgroups. Race- and sex-specific percentile distributions of FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25-75% are presented for each c… Show more

“…Pre-and post-bronchodilator measurements were performed and adjusted for age, height, gender, and race [Wang et al, 1993;CAMP Group, 1999]. The bronchodilator albuterol was administered by metered dose inhaler with a spacer and at least 15 min elapsed before post-bronchodilator measurements were obtained.…”

“…The bronchodilator albuterol was administered by metered dose inhaler with a spacer and at least 15 min elapsed before post-bronchodilator measurements were obtained. The FEV 1 measured after bronchodilator administration as a percent of predicted FEV 1 (FEV 1 PP) was the phenotype used to assess lung function [Knudson et al, 1983;Coultas et al, 1988;Wang et al, 1993;Weiss et al, 2000]. The bronchodilator responsiveness phenotypes analyzed were absolute change in FEV 1 before and after bronchodilator in mLs (ABS BD ), the absolute change as a percent of predicted FEV 1 (Pred BD ), and the absolute change as a percent of baseline FEV 1 (FEV BD ).…”

“…Predicted FEV1 values for adults Z18 years were from Crapo et al 1981 28 and for children o18 yrs from Wang et al 1993. 29 Baseline FEV1 was categorized as above or below the median whole population % predicted value. DNA was isolated from EDTA anticoagulated whole blood using the phenol-chloroform method.…”

“…Potential risk factors reported by parents on the annual family survey included maternal education, household income, immunizations, any exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, breastfeeding, wood-burning stoves, and swimming pools or hot tubs in the previous year. FEV 1 was expressed as a percentage of the predicted value for a healthy reference population based on the equations of Wang and colleagues (14). The data cutoff for the current analysis was December 31, 2013.…”
