Asthma in the obese is often severe, difficult to treat, and characterized by less eosinophilic inflammation than asthma in the nonobese. Obesity-associated metabolic dysregulation may be a causal factor. We previously reported that a nutrient- and fiber-dense bar [Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI)-bar], which was designed to fill gaps in poor diets, improved metabolism in healthy overweight/obese (OW/OB) adults. In this pilot trial, OW/OB adolescents with poorly controlled asthma were randomized to weekly nutrition/exercise classes with or without twice-daily CHORI-bar consumption. Intent-to-treat analysis did not indicate CHORI-bar-specific effects. However, restricting the analysis to participants with acceptable compliance and a relatively low fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FENO; <50/ ppb, a surrogate for noneosinophilic asthma; study participants: CHORI-bar, n = 16; controls, n = 15) indicated that CHORI-bar-specific, significant improvements in lung function (forced vital capacity, percent-predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and percent-predicted forced expiratory flow between 25 and 75% of forced vital capacity), primarily in participants with low chronic inflammation (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein <1.5 mg/L). (We previously observed that chronic inflammation blunted CHORI-bar-induced metabolic improvements in healthy OW/OB adults.) Lung function improvement occurred without weight loss and was independent of improvements in metabolic and anthropometric end points and questionnaire-based measures of asthma control and quality of life. This study suggests that a nutritional intervention can improve lung function in OW/OB adolescents with asthma and relatively low FENO without requiring major changes in dietary habits, lifestyle, or weight loss and that this effect is blunted by chronic inflammation.-Bseikri, M., McCann, J. ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare changes to pulmonary function among firefighters and non-firefighters who were exposed to harmful substances in their work environments.MethodsFirefighters (n = 322) and non-firefighters (n = 107) in Daegu who received a pulmonary function test in 2008 and 2011 as well as a regular health examination were included. Repeated measures ANOVA was performed to evaluate the pulmonary function of the two groups over the three-year period.ResultsAfter adjusting for age, height, body mass index, duration of exposure, physical activity, and smoking, which were statistically different between the two groups and known risk factors of pulmonary function, the forced expiratory volume in one s FEV1, forced vital capacity FVC, and FEV1/FVC% over the 3 year period were significantly lower among firefighters compared with non-firefighters.ConclusionsEvaluating the working environment of firefighters is difficult; however, our study revealed that pulmonary function declined in firefighters. Thus, more effort should be made to prevent and manage respiratory diseases early by preforming strict and consistent pulmonary function tests in firefighters.

Respiration or breathing is the body’s attempt to meet the needs of O2 in the metabolic process and emit CO2 as a result of intermediary metabolism by lung and respiratory organs together so that the resulting cardiovascular oxygen rich blood. Respiration has three phases: ventilation, diffusion, perfusion. The situation is said to somebody normal lung function if the work process of ventilation, diffusion, perfusion, and the relationship between ventilation to perfusion of the person is in a relaxed state resulted in the partial pressure of arterial blood gas (PaO2 and PaCO2) were normal. Examination of lung function has an important role in assessing a lung function. However, the thing to know that these checks are supporting and quite helpful in making a specific diagnosis. With spirometry examination can be known or determined all the static volume except residual volume and respiratory capacity than the capacity of residual volume that contains components such as total lung capacity and functional residual capacity. Functional residual capacity measured by special methods such as by using the inert gas helium (helium dilution test), N2 washout and bodyplethysmograph. Some static pulmonary function parameters can interpret any kind of disturbance in the lungs. In restrictive disorders in general decreased static lung volumes. While the obstruction interference parameters are quite significant, namely an increase in residual volume (RV), functional residual capacity (FRC) and the ratio of residual volume and total lung capacity (RV/TLC)
