The use of air conditioners (ACs) in homes has become a necessity in urban cities such as Lagos State. The rapid growth in the use of AC has been attributed majorly to protection from high thermal exposures. However, there have been controversies regarding physiological discomforts attributed to AC use. This study therefore seeks to elucidate the associations between AC use and some selected physical ailments using random samples from Lagos State. A structured questionnaire was administered to 200 randomly selected participants. The responses were scored, and the data were analyzed accordingly. The study showed that AC devices were mostly used in sitting room > bedroom > offices > vehicles. The frequency of cold, fever, headache, and chest pain significantly (p < 0.01) associate with the use of AC in both sitting room and bedroom. The prevalence of the associated ailments increased with increase in the AC contact duration (>6 h) among AC users evaluated in the study. Most of the participants (>70%) agreed that AC use brings thermal comfort and therefore is good to health. However, prolonged exposure in indoor AC environments increased the risk of physiological discomfort for the AC users in this study. The authors therefore suggest health workers to create awareness to educate AC users of the likely dangers with prolonged exposure.

The potential benefit of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and vitamin E (Vit.E) that they are potent antioxidants , they were used as antioxidants against acrylamide (ACR) hepatotoxicity, ACR is found in the starchy foods that had been heated for long periods in high degrees above 120°C. So the aim of the current study was to elucidate the antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective effects of either SeNPs and/or Vit.E against ACR toxicity, SeNPs were characterized by SEM, EDX, TEM and they proved their spherical nanostructure. Zeta potential value was –22.9 mv with particle size with a diameter range (48.75‐67.24 nm) which proved the high stability of the used SeNPs. Seven groups of male mice were used: group I was control,group II ACR,group III was treated with SeNPs, IV group was received Vit.E and groups V,VI received ACR plus SeNPs and ACR plus Vit.E, group VII was given combination of SeNPs and Vit.E plus ACR,So,The effect of SeNPs and/or Vit.E were monitored against ACR hepatotoxicity and hyperlipidemia. ACR administration afforded significant elevation in the hepatic enzymes with severe alterations in the lipid metabolism. These findings clarified the efficacy of SeNPs and Vit.E by declining the high hepatic enzymes activities induced by ACR along with improving the lipid profile, elevation of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD,CAT and GRx), reduction of MDA level, improving histological and ultrastructutral hepatic tissues and restoration of most normal structures that were damaged in ACR group. So, SeNPs and/or Vit.E were proved to enhance the hepatic antioxidant capacities.

Background: Lung function test is a useful indicator that measures the presence of mild abnormalities, if any. The present study aimed to compare the lung function in people from different occupations and to correlate with anthropometric measurements and blood pressure. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among students, faculty, gardeners, housekeeping, and support staff of Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) and auto drivers of Manipal. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and vital capacity (VC) were recorded using a digital spirometer. Breath-holding time (BHT), and blood pressure (BP) were recorded. Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) were measured. The data were analyzed using the Prism statistical package. Results: Forty-one males and Thirty-two females participated in this study. PEFR did not significantly differ among the different occupations but was negatively correlated with WHR in females. For VC, male students showed a significantly higher value than gardeners, whereas female students and faculty members had a considerably higher value than housekeepers. VC negatively correlated with age in males. In females, it showed a negative correlation with age, WHR, duration of indoor non-AC exposure, and systolic BP. BHT of male students and staff was significantly higher than auto drivers, and it showed a negative correlation with age, duration of outdoor exposure, and systolic BP. Lung function parameters did not correlate with indoor AC exposure in males and females. Systolic BP was significantly higher in auto drivers than students, and it increased with age in males. In females, systolic BP negatively correlated with outdoor exposure and positively correlated with indoor non-AC exposure. Among females, WHR was significantly higher in housekeepers and staff than students and faculty. Conclusion: The study results showed that vital capacity was lowest among male gardeners and female housekeepers who tend to have occupational exposure to chemicals. Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and vital capacity were lower in females with a tendency towards abdominal obesity. More considerable time spent indoors was associated with lower vital capacity and higher systolic blood pressure in females.
