Pulmonary Infiltration with Eosinophilia and Increased Serum Levels of Squamous Cell Carcinoma-Related Antigen and Neuron Specific Enolase.

Abstract: Wereport a case of pulmonary infiltration with eosinophilia (PIE), associated with increased serum levels of squamous cell carcinoma-related antigen (SCC) and neuron specific enolase (NSE). The diagnosis of PIE was confirmed by examination ofbronchoalveolar lavage fluid and specimens of transbronchial lung biopsy. It was suggested that PIE was probably induced by a course of amoxicillin for a sore throat. Corticosteroid therapy resulted in clinical improvement of symptoms, resolution of pulmonary infiltrates o… Show more

“…DLST demonstrates the specificity of the T-cell reaction to the drug. In Japan, drug-induced pneumonia and liver injury are diagnosed on the basis of DLST results [4,5,7,8], although a drug provocation test is the most reliable method for diagnosing a drug allergy [11]. Recent reports, however, indicate that the DLST is unreliable for the diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury [11].…”

“…However, serum levels of SCChave also been reported to be elevated in nonmalignant disease (2,3). Furthermore, mononuclear cell-related cytokines can stimulate the production of SCCantigen from normal squamousepithelium (4).…”

“…Serum levels of this antigen in those patients with gynecologic, head and neck (HN), lung, and esophageal SCCs are elevated, and the SCC antigen has been well used as a tumor marker against SCC patients 8–14. However, serum levels of this antigen also have been reported to be elevated in patients with nonmalignant skin or lung disease 15–25…”
