Pulmonary Mechanics, Chest X‐ray and Lung Disease After Mechanical Ventilation in Low Birth Weight Infants

Abstract: Pulmonary mechanics, chest X-ray and the incidence of clinical lung disease were studied in 41 low birth weight infants treated with intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV) in the neonatal period. Shortly after IPPV most patients, irrespective of X-ray findings, had signs of lung damage reflected in low dynamic compliance or high pulmonary resistance. Both parameters, however, had a strong tendency towards normalization during the first year of life. Overdistention on chest X-ray was common at 6--12 … Show more

“…This result may seem surprising in relation to studies from the 1970s and 1980s. 19,22,23 However, preterm controls were used in this study, which is important as healthy preterms have lower compliance of the respiratory system than infants born at term, 13 and BPD has changed over the last decades. 14 The interpretation of specific conductance is more problematic.…”

“…Studies published so far have described abnormal pulmonary mechanics in infants who developed NCLD following ventilatory treatment for HMD [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Abnormal respiratory function is frequently seen as a consequence of lung damage associated with the level of treatment.…”

“…, t · \ days. The latter were mainly very immature preterms and some infants with severe bronSudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) occurred chopulmonary dysplasia [16]. The duration of in 4 infants, i. e. one outborn infant treated in treatment is not only related to severity of the the neonatal unit and 3 inborn infants not neonatal disease but also to other factors, e. g. treated in the neonatal unit.…”
