Pulmonary Outcome in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants

Abstract: The visco-elastic and flow-resistive properties of the lungs in ELBW infants with CNLD remain only mildly abnormal, suggesting a more favorable prognosis for lung function in later years than previously reported.

“…Barovolutrauma, oxygen, pulmonary infections and PDA are the main factors predisposing to lung inflammation and to BPD 22 – 24. Antenatal steroid treatment and postnatal surfactant therapy help in preventing BPD, but they need to be associated with protective ventilatory strategies in order to minimise lung damage 2527.…”

“…Advances in neonatal care have led to significant improvement in the survival of preterm infants, but chronic lung disease (CLD) continues to be a major problem 1. Many factors have been linked to the development of CLD2 and a great deal of research has focused on those that are potentially amenable to intervention.…”

“…VILI is a major contributor to chronic lung disease (CLD) such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). BPD is a persisting complication among surviving preterm infants and its incidence has not decreased in the last decade 4. BPD causes significant complications in the newborn and is associated with mortality, cardiopulmonary dysfunction, re-hospitalisation, growth failure and poor neurodevelopmental outcome following hospital discharge.…”
