Pulmonary Superoxide Dismutase Activity in the Euthyroid and Hypothyroid Ovine Fetus

Abstract: SummaryPulmonary superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was measured in 11 euthyroid and 15 hypothyroid ovine fetuses at 130 days gestation. In the euthyroid fetus, the mean pulmonary SOD activity was similar in saline-and thyroxine-infused groups. Compared to the euthyroid fetus, the mean pulmonary SOD activity was significantly lower in the noninfused or saline-infused athyrotic fetus. Administration of thyroxine to the hypothyroid fetus results in a normalization of pulmonary SOD activity to control values. Th… Show more

“…An important question in future studies is whether the same hormonal agents act to stimulate increased synthesis of cytosolic and/or mitochondria1 SOD and cystosolic CAT and GP. Eren- berg et al (9) found low SOD activity in the lungs of fetal sheep We can hypothesize that the prenatal increases in lung SOD, made hypothyroid earlier in gestation; SOD levels were restored CAT, and GP activities may be related to the late prenatal to control fetal levels by thyroid hormone treatment. After birth, differentiation of the type I1 pneumocyte, which is the cell source lung antioxidant enzyme levels do not appear to be modified by of surfactant production (5, 27, 28, 42).…”

“…At higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, catalase has a greater scavenging activity than GPX. Antioxidant enzyme activities increase rapidly, in parallel with phospholipid content, during the final 10 to 15% of gestation in the hamster (2), rat (2-5), rabbit (2, 6), guinea pig (2), lamb (7,8), and human fetus (9). Under normoxic conditions, free oxygen radicals are kept in check by the antioxidant enzymes, but during hyperoxia production of free oxygen radicals increases rapidly and may overwhelm the capacity for detoxification.…”
