Pulp sensitivity changes during orthodontic treatment at different time periods: a prospective study

Abstract: Objective The purpose of this investigation was to recognize pulp sensitivity changes in teeth receiving orthodontic treatment by means of an electric pulp tester (Vitality Scanner Model 2006; Kerr Corporation, Brea CA, USA). Materials and methods An electric stimulus response threshold of eight teeth in 22 patients was measured prior to positioning orthodontic attachments, immediately before ligation of a nickel titanium archwire, immediately after ligati… Show more

“…The present study demonstrates that while significantly lower teeth sensitivity was found in those who received orthodontic treatment (Tables 3,4), teeth sensitivity did not retain statistical significance in the multivariate analysis (Table 5). While previous studies have shown temporary increases in sensitivity during treatment, 54 to the best of our knowledge, no other long‐term research has been conducted previously.…”

“…Pain is a subjective matter. Thus, the same stimuli can cause different pain intensities in different individuals [31]. It should be also pointed out that the limitation of this study was the impossibility of blinding the participants regarding the side under laser intervention, which may unconsciously affect the patient's perception of pain.…”

“…Increased response thresholds occur as a result of compression or tension on the apical nerve fibers, resulting in a compromised response to the electric pulp test (Modaresi et al, 2015). Threshold values depend on the degree and the duration of the application of orthodontic forces (Briseño-Marroquín et al, 2021). This situation should be taken into consideration when assessing the status of dental pulp in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment (Modaresi et al, 2015).…”
