Pulping and papermaking potential of six mangrove species in Bangladesh

Abstract: In this paper, physical, morphological and chemical characterizations of the six main mangrove species of Bangladesh [namely Keora (Sonneratia apetala), Gewa (Excoecaria agallocha), Bine (Avicennia alba), Sundari (Heritiera fomes) Pashur (Xylocarpous mekongests) and Kakra (Bruguiera gymnorhiza)] were discussed in order to assess the suitability of pulping raw materials. The wood density of these six mangrove was found to be 0.5-0.6 g cm -3 except Gewa which had 0.39 g cm -3 . The fiber length of these species … Show more

“…From this point of view, the fibers are suitable for papermaking. Less flexible, stiffer, and lower bonding properties causes due to a high Runkle ratio compared to a low value (provides a large surface area and easily collapse) during the drying process [53,54]. The bonding properties and good sheet forming characterized by the slenderness ratio (fiber length/fiber width).…”

“…Mangrove forests have an ecological function but also have an economic function, as a producer of firewood, and as a raw material for making charcoal [4]. Wood from mangrove trees can be used as raw material for paper and this is what makes mangrove wood have a high selling value [5]. Mangrove forests can be used as natural tourism areas [6].…”
