Pulse Wave Velocity Measurements Are Reproducible in Multiple Trained Observers: A Short Report

Abstract: Background: Arterial stiffness, measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV), is highly predictive of mortality in dialysis patients. As such, PWV is frequently used in clinical research studies and may have a role in clinical practice if shown to be suitably reliable. Measurement of PWV using the SphygmoCor® system is known to be an observer-dependent technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of 4 observers to acquire reproducible PWV and pulse wave analysis (PWA) measurements after a 6-week tr… Show more

“…The advent of software systems, such as the SphygmoCor device (AtCor Medical Inc.), that provide real-time feedback to the operator and can auto-capture results after a certain number of valid waveform acquisitions has occurred, have aided the operator in reliably collecting this measure. With appropriate training and practice, cfPWV and AIx measurements are highly reproducible, both within and between operators [29]. However, PWA and AIx have not been validated in adult populations to the same extent as cfPWV [24].…”

“…SphygmoCor is known to be operator-dependent, but has proved to generate highly reproducible results by multiple observers after a training period. 17 Given that carotid and femoral waveforms are recorded sequentially, variability in heart rate or BP may confound the readings.…”
