Pupillary light reflex and circadian synchronization in the elderly

Abstract: Most elderly lack a synchronized circadian rhythm and often cannot benefit from light therapy. Non-visual effects of light are mediated through intrinsic photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). With chromatic pupillometry, the functionality of ipRGCs and their functional circuit in the brain can be tested. Keywords: circadian; dementia; intrinsic photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs); pupil; reflex Demented elderly have high rates of disrupted and restless sleep behavior, promoting decay in cog… Show more

“…Especially in old age, proper functioning of the circadian timing system may become more dependent on regularly timed exposure to zeitgeber stimuli (Van Someren & Riemersma‐Van Der Lek, ) or on appropriate sleep–wake timing and amount. In this special collection, Novotny and Plischke () question the benefits of light therapy in the older population and propose chromatic pupillometry as a tool to probe functionality of arousal‐promoting non‐visual effects of light in older adults.…”
