ResumenEste artículo es una revisión de las opciones métricas disponibles para lograr que el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible 1, contenido en la Agenda 2030 de Desarrollo Sostenible aprobada por Naciones Unidas en 2015, sea realmente universal y comprometa a todos los países, no solo a los denominados países en desarrollo. Dado que la segunda meta de dicha Agenda propone "reducir al menos a la mitad la proporción de hombres, mujeres y niños de todas las edades que viven en pobreza en todas sus dimensiones con arreglo a las definiciones nacionales" el artículo cobra sentido e importancia al ofrecer un panorama de las experiencias que ya existen sobre medición de pobreza multidimensional incluyendo las de América Latina y de Europa. Partiendo de la metodología común de Alkire y Foster que superan algunas de las limitaciones de la tradicional línea de pobreza monetaria, se evidencia que existe una oportuna flexibilidad de elección en dimensiones, umbrales, ponderaciones y líneas de corte divisorias entre pobres y no pobres. AbstractThis article is a review of the metrics options available to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 1 contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development adopted by the UN in 2015. The Agenda should be truly universal and engage all countries, not just the so-called developing countries. Since the second target of the Agenda proposes to "reduce at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions" the article provides an overview of existing experiences on measuring multidimensional poverty including Latin America and Europe. Starting from the common methodology of Alkire and Foster to overcome some of the limitations of traditional monetary poverty line, it is evident that there is a timely flexibility of choice in dimensions, thresholds, weights and cut dividing line between poor and non-poor.

Terms of use: Documents in AbstractInterest in the emergence of a global middle class has resulted in a number of attempts to identify and enumerate who belongs to it . Current research provides wildly different estimates about the size and evolution of the global middle class because of a lack of consensus on appropriate identification criteria for a person to be deemed to be middle class. We identify three competing and often conflated understandings in the literature on the subject. We further argue that for at least two of these understandings, the literature has been using inappropriate thresholds for identification. Using data from the Global Consumption and Income Project, we provide estimates of the size, composition and evolution of the global middle class for three competing understandings and contrast these to existing estimates.

Much of the data underlying global poverty and inequality estimates is not in the public domain, but can be accessed in small pieces using the World Bank's PovcalNet online tool. To overcome these limitations and reproduce this database in a format more useful to researchers, we ran approximately 23 million queries of the World Bank's web site, accessing only information that was already in the public domain. This web scraping exercise produced 10,000 points on the cumulative distribution of income or consumption from each of 942 surveys spanning 127 countries over the period 1977 to 2012. This short note describes our methodology, briefly discusses some of the relevant intellectual property issues, and illustrates the kind of calculations that are facilitated by this data set, including growth incidence curves and poverty rates using alternative PPP indices.
