Purpose and benefits of hybrid simulation: Contributing to the convergence of its definition

Abstract: There is a growing trend in the number of M&S studies that report on the use of Hybrid Simulation. However, the meaning and the usage of the term varies considerably. Indeed, the hybrid simulation panel during last year's conference (WSC2016) laid bare the strong views, from the panelists and audience alike, as to what constitutes a hybrid model and what is new? The ensuing debate set the scene for this year's paper, in which we discuss the various perspectives on hybrid simulation by focusing on three aspects… Show more

HS is typically used to represent a complex system behaviour where different parts of the system can be better captured by two or more simulation methods.…”

“…Because it is argued that most, if not all, real-world problems tackled with simulation modeling cannot be solved by SD, DES or ABM alone but require a combination of 2 or all of them, a hybrid model resulting from this combination expectedly offers different perspectives of a problem and generate more insights, which will provide better understanding and greater support for decision-making. 100 The use of simulation modeling for economic analysis of different IPC measures and strategies has increased but is still relatively scarce. The application of this methodology to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of various IPC strategies is promising in a sense that it can appropriately guide and prioritize the allocation of limited resources and funds.…”

“…Although HS is widely used modelling technique in business, after reviewing the literature, the application of HS in strategic management has not been discussed widely (Mustafee et al, 2017;Brailsford et al, 2018). Therefore, the motivation of this paper is to propose a modelling development process that could be used in business to support strategic decisions.…”
