Pushing the Limits for Field Development

Abstract: The giant Al Shaheen field, offshore Qatar includes a stacked sequence of Lower Crectaceous, carbonate domimated reservoirs of a tight nature and limited thickness. A holistic development approach with real time adaption has been used to push the boundaries for the development and the field is today producing more than 300,000 barrels of oil per day in an injection supported development including the world’s longest horizontal wells of up to 12 kilometres. Innovative completion solutions, providing the means t… Show more

“…The predominant types of wells drilled by Maersk Oil in Qatar are horizontal, with very long reach reservoir sections (Thomasen et al 2005, Hoch et al 2010). The bulk of the data presented in this paper is based on the most recent, uncompensated processing alogithm.…”

“…For the ultra-long horizontal well, the efficient placement of conventional acids is critical. The difficulty of applying acid (HCl) in long horizontal wells to uniformly remove drilling damage has been identified by several authors (Brink et al 2010;Hoch et al 2010;Ritchie et al 2010). In the long horizontal well completion type, due to the limitation of Coiled Tubing (CT), acid diversion, or foam technology application, Controlled Acid Jetting (CAJ) and Acid Jetting methods are considered as the effective solution to stimulate the well.…”

“…Several papers have been published showing that well completions and intervention methods including future well stimulation techniques are an important component in field development concept (Brink et al 2010;Hoch et al 2010;Ritchie et al 2010).…”
