Putting Biology into TRIZ: A Database of Biological Effects

Abstract: Our goal is to make biological information available for engineers via a ‘biological patents’ database in TRIZ. However, biological functions need to be co‐ordinated simultaneously at many levels of organization – from cell organelle to population to ecosystem. Each function has links with other functions on different organizational levels. To account for this, we made auxiliary 5D ‘conflict’ matrices for biological structures and environments, and for causes and limits of actions; these allow us to resolve da… Show more

“…Several conceptual frameworks and collections of problem‐solving strategies exist in technology; one of them is the theory of inventive problem solving, acronymed as TRIZ from its original Russian name . It was adapted to record and abstract problem‐solving strategies found in living nature, resulting in the BioTRIZ incarnation (Figure e). Such abstraction is followed by re‐concretization and realization of the solution, which may resort to using materials that are of biological origin, synthesized via a biotemplating, biotechnological, bio‐mediated, or biomimetic route or rely on conventional materials.…”

“…Some methods have been proposed and developed for guiding how to learn from nature for engineering applications [1][2][3][4][5]82]. But the most of previous work has been focused on the engineering though there have been a few reports on how to learn from nature for business management [8,19].…”
