Putting Instruction Sequences into Effect

Jan A. Bergstra

Abstract: An attempt is made to define the concept of execution of an instruction sequence. It is found to be a special case of directly putting into effect of an instruction sequence. Directly putting into effect of an instruction sequences comprises interpretation as well as execution. Directly putting into effect is a special case of putting into effect with other special cases classified as indirectly putting into effect. Indirectly putting into effect an instruction sequence refers to a class of mechanical processe… Show more

“…Moreover I will assume that informaticology is an adequate English translation of informaticologie. 2 Informaticologie does not replace informatica. On the contrary, I propose that instead of denoting a mainly academic discipline, informatica should denote (in Dutch) a range of practical activities and competences, a practice rather than a science so to say.…”

“…The academic areas from which the bodies of knowledge for respectively the musicus and thepoliticus are derived are musicologie (musicology) and politicologie (political science). I propose to use informaticologie 2 One might object that informatiekunde (information science) already occupies the (conceptual) niche that informaticologie is supposed to inhabit. Unfortunately information science has complicating connotations rendering it of limited use for instance the mathematical bias of information theory, while informatiekunde has a definite bias towards business informatics (in Dutch).…”

“…Slightly abbreviated it is reasonable to speak of "decision taking dependent behavioral promises" in this case. 8 1.8 Some risks connected with OODT as a research theme Having formulated OODT in [9] and further developed in [10] and [11], I am in a position which is both comfortable and uncomfortable. The comfortable aspect is that a range of case studies can be undertaken in order to find out to which extent OODT applies in specific areas and hopefully a contribution to decision taking, both theory and practice, for those areas can be achieved.…”

“…By using "selling" instead of "sales" I intend to highlight the real time character of the activity, rather than to make a reference to an abstract activity class. A selling thread is supposed to consist of the putting into effect (see [8]) of an instruction sequence (see [14,17]) in an appropriate execution environment (see [19]). 19 It will be assumed that a selling thread is put into effect by a broker.…”
