In this paper, we show the effect of some essential oils (EOs) on staphylococci, including multidrug-resistant strains isolated from pyoderma in dogs. A total of 13 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and 8 Staphylococcus aureus strains were studied. To assess the sensitivity of each strain to the antimicrobial agents, two commercial EOs from patchouli (Pogostemon cablin; PcEO) and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia; MaEO) as well as two antibiotics (gentamicin and enrofloxacin) were used. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) followed by checkerboards in the combination of EO-antibiotic were performed. Finally, fractional inhibitory concentrations were calculated to determine possible interactions between these antimicrobial agents. PcEO MIC ranged from 0.125 to 0.5 % v/v (1.2–4.8 mg/mL), whereas MaEO MIC was tenfold higher (0.625–5% v/v or 5.6–44.8 mg/mL). Gentamicin appeared to be highly prone to interacting with EOs. Dual synergy (38.1% of cases) and PcEO additive/MaEO synergism (53.4%) were predominantly observed. On the contrary, usually, no interactions between enrofloxacin and EOs were observed (57.1%). Both commercial EOs were characterized by natural composition without artificial adulteration. Patchouli and tea tree oils can be good alternatives for treating severe cases of pyoderma in dogs, especially when dealing with multidrug-resistant strains.

Medicinal plants as therapeutic options for topical treatment in canine dermatology? A systematic review

Background Medicinal plants have been used traditionally since centuries for wound care and treatment of skin diseases both in human and animals. Skin diseases are one of the most common reasons for owners to take their dog to the veterinarian. The demands for treatment and prophylaxis of these diseases are broad. A wide range of bacteria including antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be involved, making the treatment challenging and bear an anthropo-zoonotic potential. The aim of this review is to systematically evaluate based on recent scientific literature, the potential of four medicinal plants to enrich the therapeutic options in pyoderma, canine atopic dermatitis, otitis externa, wounds and dermatophytosis in dogs. Results Based on four books and a survey among veterinarians specialized in phytotherapy, four medicinal plants were chosen as the subject of this systematic review: Calendula officinalis L. (Marigold) , Hypericum perforatum L. agg. (St. John’s Wort) , Matricaria chamomilla L. (syn. Matricaria recutita L., Chamomile) and Salvia officinalis L. (Sage). According to the PRISMA statement through literature research on two online databases a total of 8295 publications was screened and narrowed down to a final 138 publications for which full-text documents were analyzed for its content resulting in a total of 145 references (21 clinical, 24 in vivo and 100 in vitro references). Conclusions All four plants were proven to have antibacterial and antifungal effects of a rather broad spectrum including antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This makes them an interesting new option for the treatment of pyoderma, otitis externa, infected wounds and dermatophytosis. Marigold, St. John’s Wort and Chamomile showed wound-healing properties and are thus promising candidates in line to fill the therapeutic gap in canine wound-healing agents. St. John’s Wort and Chamomile also showed anti-inflammatory and other beneficial effects on healthy skin. Due to the wide range of beneficial effects of these medicinal plants, they should be taken into account for the treatment of dermatologic diseases in dogs at least in future clinical research. Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is considered as a major pathogen in dogs, typically involved in skin and ear infections. Other staphylococci, as well as ß-hemolytic streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa or yeast-like fungi of the genus Malassezia also play an important role in inflammation. Because of this diversity, an appropriate choice of antimicrobial agent(-s) can be difficult. A total of 474 tests were performed (including 255 pyoderma and 219 otitis externa cases). In the case of pyoderma, 82.4% of skin lesions were caused by stap hylococci. Co-infections with ß-hemolytic streptococci (17.3 %), Malassezia sp. (15.7 %) and P. aeruginosa (4.3 %) were also recorded. For external ear infections, the share of staphylococci in inflammation was lower (44.8 %) than that of Malassezia sp. (58 %). Relatively frequent co-infections with ß-hemolytic streptococci (18.8 %) and P. aeruginosa (7.8 %) were also noted. A total of 308 susceptibility tests for coagulase-positive staphylococci were performed (210 and 98 for skin and otitis externa, respectively). In ≥ 86 % of cases, amoxicillin potentiated with clavulanic acid, cephalexin and fluoroquinolones effectively inhibited the growth of all bacteria in vitro. A total of 25 isolates (24 S. pseudintermedius and one S. aureus) were considered as methicillin-resistant. The mecA gene was identified in 100 % of those strains but only 44 % of the isolates additionally carried the blaZ gene. All mecA-positive staphylococci were multidrugresistant, mainly to all ß-lactams, fluoroquinolones, linkozamides, macrolides as well as sulfonamides but always susceptible to mupirocin. Overall, multidrug-resistance varied between 6 % (otitis externa) and 9 % (inflamed skin) and may become a significant problem in the future.
