Pyroelectric nanoplates for reduction of CO2 to methanol driven by temperature-variation

Abstract: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a problematic greenhouse gas, although its conversion to alternative fuels represents a promising approach to limit its long-term effects. Here, pyroelectric nanostructured materials are shown to utilize temperature-variations and to reduce CO2 for methanol. Layered perovskite bismuth tungstate nanoplates harvest heat energy from temperature-variation, driving pyroelectric catalytic CO2 reduction for methanol at temperatures between 15 °C and 70 °C. The methanol yield can be as high as … Show more

“…Xiao et al [60] found that the pyroelectric properties of ferroelectrics could be used for cost-effective and ecofriendly CO 2 reduction. For example, layered perovskite bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) nanoplate could harvest heat energy from tempera- and ii represent the electric potential under light case and light+ultrasound wave or light+temperature fluctuation.…”

“…The internal polarization reduces when the temperature increases and thus breaks the balance, which induces free charges. The negative charges will react with CO 2 to form methanol and the free positive charges would transfer [60] Copyright 2021, Springer Nature.…”

“…When the spontaneous polarization in a material changes with temperature, the surface of the material generates positive and negative polarization charges gathering in different areas along a certain direction. [ 140 ] This characteristic is defined as the pyroelectric effect, and a material with this pyroelectric effect is a pyroelectric material. The discharge effect can be divided into the first‐level pyroelectric effect, the second‐level pyroelectric effect, and the third‐level pyroelectric effect.…”

“…So far, pyrocatalysis has already been applied in fields of pollutant degradation, water splitting, carbon dioxide reduction, oxygen activation, antibiosis, etc., and especially the production of value‐added H 2 and carbon‐containing fuels has significance on alleviating the current energy crisis, though there are few explorations on pyrocatalytic CO 2 reduction at present. [ 346 ] In addition, light as an important part of energy in natural world, starts to be combined with temperature fluctuations to drive water splitting into H 2 , which is deemed as an attractive development direction.…”
