“…The combination of dynamic headspace and pyrolytic polymer characterizations with subambient GClMS and capillary columns was reported by Levy et al for analysis of organics in meteorites [14-161. Levy emphasized a multistep approach, using initial low temperature heat treatment to drive off headspace volatiles for analysis, followed by high temperature pyrolytic heating experiments, conducted in serial order to degrade the polymer backbone into low molecular weight compounds for analysis. Later, Hu [17] reported the usefulness of Levy's multistep technique with packed column GC for maintaining a high degree of quality control in industrial polymer applications. In the present work, this two stage dynamic headspace/pyrolysis technique is combined with the improved resolving power of a fused silica capillary column (FSCC) and the identification capability of a computerized, fast scanning quadrupole mass spectrometer [18].…”

“…We felt that an on-line process, which could be carried out in the carrier gas flow system, would be more desirable than elimination of the volatiles by extraction or use of a waiting period. Chromatopyrography (7)(8)(9)(10)(11) is such a process.…”

“…All volatile ingredients of the sample are thus subjected to CPG analysis. Another factor is that the dynamic percolating conditions in the heated injection port substantially lower the boiling temperatures of the monomeric ingredients to such an extent that practically all volatile ingredients are vaporized instantaneously at 270 °C while the high polymers are not affected (11).…”
