“…According to the reaction scheme of coal pyrolysis in hydrogen plasma proposed by Baumann et al (1988) and the analysis on coal particles in the 2 MW reactor, devolatilization of coal is believed to be the first essential step of this process. When coal particles are rapidly heated to the devolatilization temperature, the devolatilization model is applied to calculate the mass release of coal.…”

“…However, the ultimate temperature and the heating rate are much different in different coal utilization processes. Coal devolatilization is finished in several hours (with a heating rate of 10 À1 to 10 1 K/s) in a coking plant, within a few seconds or less (with a heating rate of 10 2 to 10 4 K/s) in the processes of gasification or combustion [10], and within several milliseconds (with a heating rate of 10 4 -10 6 K/s) in a plasma process [11,12]. Thus, if the fundamental knowledge of coal pyrolysis under different heating rate and ultimate temperature as well as the relationship among these coal utilization processes are well established, a simple, quick method of coal rank preliminary selection for the industrial plasma technology could be proposed.…”

“…The improved CFD-DPM model was validated with the experimental data reported by Baumann et al [27] . As shown in Figure 10 , the predicted variations of both carbon conversion to acetylene and light gas with the axial location, showed a good agreement with ms reaction time.…”

“…Consequently, the inward fl ow of thermal energy to coal particles is critical for coal devolatilization. According to the reaction scheme of coal pyrolysis in hydrogen plasma proposed by Baumann et al [27] , devolatilization of coal is believed to be the fi rst essential step of this process. Higuera [45] simulated the devolatilization of a moving coal particle using a competing reaction pyrolysis model, and pointed out that the relative motion would enhance the heat transfer and then decrease the devolatilization time at high gas temperature.…”
