QALYs for COVID-19: A Comparison of US EQ-5D-5L Value Sets

Abstract: Background In economic evaluations, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) can serve as a unit of measurement for disease burden. Obtaining QALY values for COVID-19 presents a challenge owing to the availability of two US EQ-5D-5L value sets and the potentially asymptomatic presentation of the disease. The first value set was completed allowing for the discounting of future health outcomes while the second value set is undiscounted. Objective The objective of this study wa… Show more

“…The EQ-5D-5L measures five domains of HRQoL during a recall period of today ( Devlin & Brooks, 2017 ). It can be used as an indicator of the Burden of Disease such as Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALY) ( Poteet & Craig, 2021 ). The EQ-5D-5L includes five dimensions: Mobility (MO), Self-Care (SC), Usual activities (UA), Pain/Discomfort (PD), and Anxiety/Depression (AD).…”

“…Previous studies on the QALYs lost in COVID-19 cases have been limited and focussed on the acute illness [31]. Compared to previous studies on the H1N1pdm2009 pandemic influenza virus, our estimates are higher than the estimated mean of 2.9 (range: 0-9.9) QALDs lost in laboratory-confirmed influenza cases in the UK [12] and of 3.3 (95% CI, 2.6–4.0) QALDs lost in Spain [11].…”

“…Evidence related to health utility for COVID-19 is currently limited but rapidly emerging [ 29 ]. Given the lack of evidence at the time of writing, we identified utility impacts of similar conditions.…”
