QP structure of the accretionary wedge in the Kumano Basin, Nankai Trough, Japan, revealed by long-offset walk-away VSP

Abstract: We determined the seismic attenuation structure of the Kumano Basin, a forearc basin in the central part of the Nankai subduction zone. “…This high attenuation is similar to what we observe in the faulted incoming Pacific Plate in Hikurangi. Hino et al (2015) determined that the Qp structure of the accretionary wedge in the Kumano Basin was composed of three layers down to ∼10 km: two layers down to 4.1 km with Qp values of 34 and 57 and a 6.7 km thick layer with a Qp of 349. The Qp of the shallowest two layers is consistent with Qp of seafloor sediments (30-50), and the authors note that the moderate attenuation of the accretionary wedge is similar to crustal layers onshore.…”
