QTL and PACE analyses identify candidate genes for anthracnose resistance in tomato

Abstract: Anthracnose, caused by the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum spp., is one of the most significant tomato diseases in the United States and worldwide. No commercial cultivars with anthracnose resistance are available, limiting resistant breeding. Cultivars with genetic resistance would significantly reduce crop losses, reduce the use of fungicides, and lessen the risks associated with chemical application. A recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population (N=243) has been made from a cross between the susceptible… Show more

“…Using DNA markers that are linked to targeted characteristics, molecular breeding facilitates the selection of genotypes with desirable traits. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to abiotic and biotic stress resilience, high yield, quality traits, and high nutritional value have been identified in several landraces [ 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) including marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC), gene pyramiding, marker-assisted recurrent selection (MARS), and genomic selection (GS), aid in the identification of alleles and the transfer of desired genes [ 26 ].…”
