QTL mapping for haploid male fertility by a segregation distortion method and fine mapping of a key QTL qhmf4 in maize

Abstract: Four QTL related to haploid male fertility were detected by a segregation distortion method and the key QTL qhmf4 was fine mapped to an interval of ~800 kb. Doubled haploid (DH) technology enables rapid development of homozygous lines in maize breeding programs. However, haploid genome doubling is a bottleneck for the commercialization of DH technology and is limited by haploid male fertility (HMF). This is the first study reporting the quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of HMF in maize. Four QTL, qhmf1, … Show more

“…The detected HMF QTL in our study did not completely match those QTL reported previously (Table S3). Based on physical coordinates from reference sequences, there is an overlap of HMF QTL with flanking markers umc2266‐umc2268 (present study), bnlg1035‐umc1528 (Ren et al, ) and umc1539‐umc1528 (Wu, ) on chromosome 3, as well as umc1409‐dupssr9 (present study) and SNP Chr7.S_113165535 (Ma et al, ) on chromosome 7, umc1607‐phi080 (present study) and umc1997‐dupssr14 (Wu, ) on chromosome 8. To date, 34 QTL related to HMF have been detected across 10 chromosomes in the present and previous studies.…”

“…There is no uniform standard to measure the characteristics of haploid fertility restoration. Kleiber et al () and Ren et al () scored anther emergence and classified haploids using a 5‐point scale based on (score 1) less than 5%, 6%–20% (score 2), 21%–50% (score 3), 51%–75% (score 4) and 76%–100% (score 5) of anthers emerged on the tassel. Chalyk () and Geiger et al () assessed shedding efficiency in their studies.…”
