Quali-quantitative analysis: a new model for evaluation of unusual cases in hospital performance?

Abstract: This paper aims to provide hospital administrators and others making decisions about hospital error funding, as well as researchers, with information about what good hospital error research looks like. It offers a selective review of how the error literature has approached hospital error, which is used to develop five criteria for sound hospital error research. It also explores the potential for better hospital error research of quali-quantitative analysis (QQA), an innovative social sciences research method. … Show more

“…In these studies, the problem faced is described in a more abstract form, focusing on causality but not providing mathematical equations ( Yan et al, 2013 ). Nonetheless, because of the usage of “quantitative” as a search keyword, these papers own some quantitative aspects, but the authors applied mainly transdisciplinary or mixed research methods, including both quantitative approaches and qualitative ones ( Bell, 2007 ).…”

“…These book-length studies have recognised the particular nature of both qualitative and quantitative research for policy-making contexts [3,4,5,6]. As well, across many sub-specialities of health, where holistic health challenges present complex methodological demands, ranging from as adolescent substance abuse to clinical error management and quality assurance in hospitals, there is increasing dissatisfaction with the social relevance of traditional research methods, and increasing recognition of a divide between research and policy and practice [7,8,9]. In great part, this relates to the increasingly apparent methodological limitations of both traditional qualitative and quantitative methods for studying context: the contexts of clients, their services, and their communities.…”

“…In fact, my analysis seeks to combine close reading techniques with the identification of more general patterns, and centers on two specific case studies which it wants to compare (cf. Bell, 2007;Moats & Borra, 2018). Quali-quantitative analysis complements the systematicity of quantitative research -most often through the adoption of digital tools for data gathering, analysis, or data visualization -with the interpretative focus of qualitative research.…”

“…Quali-quantitative analysis complements the systematicity of quantitative research -most often through the adoption of digital tools for data gathering, analysis, or data visualization -with the interpretative focus of qualitative research. An additional advantage is that this qualitative interpretation of data can enrich the typical statistical analyses of quantitative research, in which data is usually homogenized, and critical details may be overlooked (Bell, 2007;Moats & Borra, 2018) To illustrate, Moats and Borra consider network analysis to be an ultimate example of quali-quantitative research, given the possibilities it provides for data visualization, the discovery of broader patterns, and the detailed exploration of connections between the data.…”
