Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation of Phenolic Compounds in Iris dichotoma Pall

Abstract: The methodology developed proved to be effective for the identification and quantification of phenolic compounds in the rhizomes of I. dichotoma. Samples were classified into three groups according to their geographical origin based on their phenolic composition using principal component analysis.

“…Isoflavones, flavones, xanthones and benzophenones have been discovered as major phenolic constituents in Iris spp. (Williams et al 1997;Mizuno et al 2012;Wei et al 2012;Kaššák 2014;Xie et al 2014;Kukula-Koch et al 2015). Rhizomes are known from traditional usage and medicine, obviously because of their phenolic compounds (Kaššák 2012).…”

“…Rhizomes are known from traditional usage and medicine, obviously because of their phenolic compounds (Kaššák 2012). Moreover, some recent surveys have revealed medically useful phenolic compounds in rhizomes of some other Iris taxa (Conforti et al 2009;Rigano et al 2009;Wei et al 2012;Xie et al 2014;Venditti et al 2017). Recently, a number of isoflavones together with two benzophenones, a xanthone and the ubiquitous β-sitosterol have been isolated and identified from a sample of I. adriatica of undefined origin bought at an open market (Bukvički et al 2017).…”

“…[3] Many isoflavones were named after the type of Iris from which they were common or firstly isolated. Identification of isoflavones and their derivatives, in the absence of standards, was achieved using the available literature on phytochemicals previously isolated or just identified in some of Iris spp, [5,7,13,30,[41][42][43] as well as by studying of its MS fragmentation pattern (exact mass and MS 4 fragmentation). Tables 1 and 2 summarized MS data for all isoflavone derivatives (compounds 32 -52) found in our Iris species.…”

“…In the last few years, several groups have used HPLC-DAD-ESI-MS n for the identification of the metabolic profile of several medicinal plants [ 40 , 41 , 42 ]. This method was used by Wei et al for the identification of known isoflavones in the rhizomes of I. tectorum and I. dichotoma grown in China.…”
