Qualitative and quantitative studies of autoantibodies to phospholipids in diabetes mellitus

Abstract: SUMMARYDiabetes mellitus is associated with vascular and neurological complications. We have investigated the presence of antibodies to phospholipids and to phospholipid binding plasma proteins in blood samples collected from 68 clinically and biochemically characterized type I and type II diabetic patients and from 252 healthy blood donor controls. Each sample was analysed for antibodies to three phospholipids (cardiolipin, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine), the antibody isotypes (IgA, IgG and … Show more

“…In addition to atherosclerosis, circulating natural antiphospholipid antibodies and/or their epitopes are increased in several disease states including antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis (35)(36)(37)(38). EO6 strongly recognized PEIPC and PECPC isomers (Fig.…”

“…In a recent collaborative study, we published that kininogen-independent IgA aPE was significantly associated with proliferative retinopathy in diabetes mellitus patients [67]. This IgA aPE also was associated with high concentrations of the prothrombin degradation product, F1+2.…”

“…Antibodies against vascular cells ( 25 ), collagens ( 26 ), and phospholipids ( 27 ) have been reported in patients with DR. Furthermore, because the retina is lipid-rich, oxidation of other retinal lipids or lipid-protein structures could yield epitopes similar layer (i.e., in subjects with no clinical DR), but permeated all layers in those with overt DR.…”
