Qualitative and semi-quantitative determination of chromium(VI) in aqueous solution using 1,5-diphenylcarbazide-loaded foam

Abstract: The detection and determination of low concentrations of chromate ion in aqueous solution are import ant for many purposes, particularly in environmental pollution analyses. Many spot-test reagents have been suggested1 for this purpose.

“…Total, acid-extractable Cr was measured using 1,5-DPC as the detection reagent ( Fig. 3c ) ( Farag et al ., 1981 ). The measured intensity was linear with respect to Cr mass with a range between 0.37 and 6 µg and a relative SD of 8.2% among repeated measurements.…”

“…To measure Cr(VI) via µPAD, the same protocol could be followed, but tetravalent cerium (Ce(IV)) could be excluded from the pretreatment zone. Tetravalent cerium oxidizes soluble Cr(III) to Cr(VI) for complexation with 1,5-DPC, and thus, in the absence of Ce(IV), only Cr(VI) from the original sample is measured ( Farag et al ., 1981 ). As a result, this method shows promise for measurement of total soluble Cr or soluble Cr(VI).…”

“…The second variant is associated with the techniques of thin layer spectrophotometry, which rationally combines the preconcentration of elements on PUF with direct determination of the absorption of light by the solid phase. 53,62,94,185,214,216,230 The essence of the method is in the sorption of coloured compounds by a PUF specimen shaped like a thin parallelepiped with dimensions corresponding to those of the cell (26160.1 cm), transfer of the sorbent into a cell filled with an organic solvent and measurement of the optical density. The solvent serves as an immersion liquid reducing light scattering.…”

“…Methods have been reported for determination of bismuth as an iodide complex; 53 cobalt as the thiocyanate; 62 phosphate ions as the reduced form of the molybdophosphoric heteropolyacid; 94 zinc and bismuth, 212 divalent mercury chloride and phenylmercury chloride 216 as dithizonates; and chromium as blue peroxochromic acid and a complex with diphenylcarbazide. 185,230 However, these methods are characterised by relatively narrow ranges of linearity of calibrating plots and relatively low reproducibility of the results.…”

“…El metal que se ha determinado más ampliamente con la DPCI es el Cr (VI), debido a que es un método muy rápido, sencillo y selectivo, cuando el pH se mantiene entre 1-2 para la determinación del Cr (VI), además de la espectrofotometría se han utilizado otras técnicas como la voltamperometría [31 ], cromatografia [32,33] y el análisis de inyección en flujo [34][35][36][37][38].…”
