Qualitative Data Analysis Strategies

Abstract: This chapter provides an overview of selected qualitative data analysis strategies with a particular focus on codes and coding. Preparatory strategies for a qualitative research study and data management are first outlined. Six coding methods are then profiled using comparable interview data: process coding, in vivo coding, descriptive coding, values coding, dramaturgical coding, and versus coding. Strategies for constructing themes and assertions from the data follow. Analytic memo writing is woven throughout… Show more

“…A similar approach was adopted to identify and code the actors, actions, and mechanisms involved in the three categories of dynamic capabilities: knowledge creation and absorption, knowledge integration, and knowledge reconfiguration. These two sets of categories were then compared so as to detect interrelationships (Saldaña, 2011) and subsequently distinguish between knowledge-related and people-related processes.…”

“…Researcher memos, linkages to the theoretical framework(s) and literature review, and inter-rater reliability contributed to the rigor of this study. Research analytic memos were recorded by two coders while simultaneously uncovering initial codes (Saldaña, 2011, 2016). Discussion of memos throughout the coding process promoted researcher reflexivity (Allen, 2000).…”

“…MAXQDA was used similarly to existing qualitative analyses in the family field (e.g., Daugherty, 2016; Goldfarb et al, 2018; Manoogian et al, 2015). Specifically, MAXQDA Analytics Pro 18.2.0 was used to manage and analyze the data for this study (Saldaña, 2011) and to calculate inter-coder agreement using Cohen’s kappa between the primary codes (agreed upon by the first and third authors) and the codes generated by the fourth author with input from the second author. One additional researcher reviewed all of the data and codes to serve as an audit or peer review.…”

“…The qualitative research materials for the study presented in this article consisted of interview transcripts, artifacts, photographs, screenshots, and observations. Saldaña (2011) remarks of the benefits of utilizing multiple data sources which allow for a “greater spectrum” of understanding and dimension (p. 76). A pilot study was conducted 4 years prior to the start of the qualitative phase of the data collection.…”
