Qualitative research in healthcare: An introduction to grounded theory using thematic analysis

Abstract: As with all analytical approaches, grounded theory has drawbacks and limitations. It is important to have an understanding of these in order to assess the applicability of this approach to healthcare research. In this review we outline the principles of grounded theory, and focus on thematic analysis as the analytical approach used most frequently in grounded theory studies, with the aim of providing clinicians with the skills to critically review studies using this methodology. “…The overall analytical approach was grounded theory. Grounded theory is used to make sense of perceptions of participants about certain events or phenomena, rather than being informed by a pre-existing hypothesis [24]. It is being used in health systems research to explore patients’ perceptions and experiences of services as well as of illness [25].…”

“…PD and fellow responses were compared using an independent t test for continuous variables and the Chi-squared test for proportions. For the optional comments left by respondents, a grounded theory approach (inductive process of generating broader insights from qualitative data) was used to identify themes for improving the inpatient training experience [13]. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant.…”

“…Grounded theory has approach to qualitative data an inductive method of developing new theory based on the possibility of interpretation from specific phenomenon to general and it is openness to multiple explanations in the process of generation of qualitative theory [1920]. In grounded theory it is possible the continuous categorization comparing with the literature and provides an analysis with a generation of theory, this being one of the characteristics that allowed to be so used in health research [20].…”
