“…The importance of maize in the diet of the badger has also been pointed out in other studies, especially in other areas of Switzerland (Stocker & Lüps, 1984;Lüps et al, 1987Lüps et al, , 1991Roper & Lüps, 1995) or in areas lying in the same latitudes (Mouches, 1981;Canova & Rosa, 1994).…”

“…All animals killed before 2100 h had 'empty' stomachs (ie total contents were less than 20 ml). Conversely, stomachs containing more than 200 ml were found only in animals killed after 0200 h. Thus it seems reasonable to conclude that total volume of stomach contents is approximately related to time of death, though it is also known to vary with season (Stocker and Lüps 1984). Table 1 summarises the overall contents of the 85 stomachs in terms of (a) total volume of each prey category ; (b) frequency of occurrence of each prey category ; and (c) mean volume of each prey category per stomach, taking into account only those stomachs in which a given prey category was present.…”

“…Stomach contents were removed from 138 badgers collected by the Berne Natural History Museum from 1973 to 1982 (for further details see Stocker and Lüps 1984 ;Lüps 1984). The animals were collected from an area of 650 km 2 in the Swiss midlands, mostly consisting of a hilly region (500 to 950 m) to the south-east of Berne.…”

“…Predominant vegetal species in the wooded pastures are spruce (Picea abies) and plane (Acer pseudo-platanus) trees, as well as bushes such as the dog rose, Rosa canina. Cereals are not commonly grown, and maize (Zea mais), which was frequently found in the diet of badgers living in the Swiss Midlands (Stocker and Lüps 1984), does not occur in the area (Fischer et al 2005). Small patches of forest dominated by spruce (Abieti-Fagetum) also occur over 20% of the area.…”
