Quality and completeness of diagnoses recorded in the new CPRD Aurum Database: evaluation of pulmonary embolism

Abstract: Purpose The Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) now provides a new medical record database, CPRD Aurum. This is the first of several studies being undertaken to assess the quality and completeness of CPRD Aurum data for research endeavors. Methods We identified patients with a pulmonary embolism (PE) diagnosis from a random sample of 50 000 patients in CPRD Aurum and compared the diagnoses using data from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES). We calculated the proportion of PE cases recorded in CPRD Aurum … Show more

“…The findings of this study are consistent with two prior assessments conducted in this same data sample: 10 , 11 diagnoses recorded in CPRD Aurum are of relatively high correctness for use in medical research; however, completeness may not be sufficient for all research questions. When using CPRD Aurum data, researchers should consider study design choices or the addition of linked data.…”

“…The study was based in a random sample of 50 000 CPRD Aurum patients aged 20 or older with at least one hospital episode in the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database used in other CPRD Aurum validation assessments. 13,14 From this sample, we selected all patients with any lab records (ie, at least one MedCode for a lab measurement accompanied by both a numeric result and a normal range) in the years 2005 to 2018 ( Figure 1). The requirement for the presence of lab value ranges was applied to minimize inclusion of test results susceptible to data entry errors as lab data transferred electronically from the laboratory typically include normal range values.…”
