Quality comparison of tap water vs. bottled water in the industrial city of Yanbu (Saudi Arabia)

Abstract: This study was conducted to compare the quality of bottled water with potabilized desalinated tap water. Fourteen brands of local and imported bottled water samples were collected from the local market and analyzed for physicochemical parameters in the Royal Commission Environmental Laboratory. Results were compared with 5-year continuous monitoring data of tap water from different locations in Madinat Yanbu Al-Sinaiyah (MYAS) including storage tanks of desalination plant. Results show that there was no signif… Show more

“…Failure to detect feacal/thermotolerant coliforms and a very low incidence of E. coli in imported bottled water samples tested may mean that the samples are free from feacal contamination and that the bottled water may be microbially safe for consumption by the public (Abdulraheem et al, 2012;Ahmad and Bajahlan, 2009;Al-Omran et al, 2013).…”

“…In spite of the pH of samples S23 and S32 is 7.25 and 7.62 respectively figures (5,6), the concentration of iron in the samples is 4.1(less concentrations), this because the samples were taken from treated water.…”

“…THMs in the desalinated and blended water from Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE were in the ranges of 0.27 -6.4, 7.11 -104.89, 4.02 -83.31 and 7.0 -15.0 μg/L respectively ( Table 2). Figure 1 The THMs database obtained in this study was expanded using additional data from the desalinated and blended waters in different desalination plants and WDS in the major cities in Saudi Arabia [5,7,16,[22][23][24][25]. Using the combined data, the best-fit statistical distributions were developed for THMs.…”
