A theoretical model is presented describing the concentration profile of a dissolved element within a solidified ingot under the condition that the intensity of streaming within the bulk melt is altered during solidification. Segregation experiments with iron‐carbon alloys in a unidirectional solidification device with the stirring conditions in the bulk melt altered during the solidification process were carried out. The concentration profile of carbon within the solidified ingot was measured. The experimentally observed profile could satisfactorily be described by the theoretical model. The model was used to calculate the concentration profile of carbon within the white bands of continuously cast steel slabs that were electromagnetically stirred. The method of calculation is described. The calculated and the measured profiles were in good agreement.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
