Quality Improvement of Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Abstract: The mobile NCPAP cart with prepacked fixation kits is a practical way of expediting the initiation of NCPAP therapy. The written nursing protocol decreased the incidence of nasal trauma in infants, except for those with an extremely low birth weight.

“…Moreover, a Turkish study of RDS management (CPAP-based) reported a low baseline knowledge level among 36 neonatal nurses with 1-5 years of working experience in NICUs (Tiryaki & Cinar 2016). Consistent with Tiryaki and Cinar, another study has reported that medical staff, including nurses, scored 69% on a questionnaire assessing basic knowledge related to NCPAP indications, mechanism applications, contraindications and complications (Chen et al 2017). These earlier findings, along with our findings, highlight the need to improve nursing knowledge of the most common health problems among premature neonates.…”

“…The significant improvement in nursing knowledge and practice relating to RDS and its management following the educational sessions attests to the effectiveness of lecture-based, interactive educational interventions. The efficacy of this approach has been confirmed by other studies of neonatal nursing knowledge pertaining specifically to infant nursing care (Shrestha et al 2013;Tiryaki & Cinar 2016;Chen et al 2017). For example, Chen et al (2017) report that the mean scores for knowledge of NCPAP therapy for 59 medical staff working in NICUs, including nurses who had attended lectures and participated in small group discussions, rose from 69.2 to 98.3% following a training programme.…”
