Quality of dredged material in the River Seine basin (France). I. Physico-chemical properties

Abstract: In rivers, sediments are frequently accumulating persistent chemicals, especially for those that are more contaminated as a consequence of pressure related to environmental pollution and human activity. The Seine river basin (France) is heavily polluted from nearby industrial activities, and the urban expansion of Paris and its suburbs within the Ile de France region and the sediments present in the Seine river basin are contaminated. To ensure safe, navigable waters, rivers and waterways must be dredged. In t… Show more

“…If such phenomena have been described in soils, studies in sediments are very seldom and particularly in strictly anaerobic conditions [19,20]. However, it is necessary to understand the microbial activity in anoxic sediments since the potential release of metals, particularly in fresh water, may contaminate the neighboring ground water masses, for example, in the case of storage of dredged sediments in wet ponds [21,22].…”

“…Furthermore, few studies have focused on the key role of certain bacterial communities such as iron-reducing bacteria (Bousserrhine et al 1999a(Bousserrhine et al , 1999bQuantin et al 2001). Such information is, however, necessary to understand the impact of microorganisms on anoxic sediments since the release of metals, particularly in freshwater, may contaminate neighboring groundwater masses, for example, in the case of storage of dredged sediments in ponds (Carpentier et al 2002a;2002b).…”

“…The Seine estuary (France) is considered as one of the most polluted estuaries in Europe, subject to an important anthropogenic pressure due to its location at the outlet of the Seine watershed (Burgeot et al, 2017;Cachot et al, 2006;Carpentier et al, 2002;Meybeck et al, 2004). The Seine basin represents a territory of 78 600 km and welcomes more than a quarter of the French population (Dévier et al, 2013).…”
