Quality of health care provided at a pediatric nurse‐managed clinic

Abstract: Benefits of addressing the research question in this study include the preservation of the nurse-managed healthcare safety net, increased access to health care for the medically underserved population resulting in improved health outcomes, and evidence to suggest that NMCs can assist private practice physicians to support this population of patients.

“…By identifying foster caregivers who have a particularly hectic home life and making sure that they get special attention from the clinic staff and feel engaged with their child’s health care plan, it may be possible to improve their pediatric appointment adherence. Pediatric nurse practitioners provide much of the primary care for underserved child populations, including children in foster care (Coddington, Sands, Edwards, Kirkpatrick, & Chen, 2011; Hapak, 2014). Pediatric nurse practitioners can help foster caregivers by making sure that the clinic environment supports their needs and by engaging caregivers in their child’s health care.…”

“…24 Evidence shows the quality of health Patient Experience Journal, Volume 6, Issue 3 -2019 care services at nurse-led clinics, delivered by APRNs have met and exceeded national benchmark standards of care. [20][21] These studies validate the increasingly important role that nurse-led clinics play in the health care safety net, provide evidence of quality care, and confirm the costeffectiveness of APRNs' care for vulnerable populations. [22][23] While there are wide variations in public, academic and private nurse-led care practices, they share the common goal of creating health care that is highly reliable, valuefocused, patient-centered, high in quality, and safely delivered.…”

“…In the US, nurse-led clinics have emerged over the past 40 years as an effective primary care delivery system, most often staffed primarily by Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). 20,21 Nurse-led clinics were formally recognized as a primary care delivery model in the Affordable Care Act. 22 The primary care services in nurse-led clinics have become more critical in the US health care system, in part, because of their philosophy of comprehensive and coordinated care and the willingness of APRNs to provide care to vulnerable populations including refugees.…”

“…The concept of high quality of care provided by NMHCs is also echoed in the results of a study conducted by Coddington et al (2011). NMHCs administer comprehensive health care with positive health outcomes and offer a high level of patient satisfaction.…”

“…NMHCs are a cost-effective model of health care delivery that offer health services within nursing values that emphasize health promotion, disease prevention and education for patients in order to manage their chronic health conditions. NMHCs increase patients ' knowledge and create a supportive environment for patients to become active members in their health maintenance (Coddington & Sands, 2008;Coddington, Sands, Edwards, Kirkpatrick, & Chen, 2011 ). Moreover, an important component of the health services provided by many NMHCs is community outreach which can extend to the homes of patients who need more intensive care (Esperat et al , 2012).…”
