Quality of Life Comparison between Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty in Patients with Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures

Abstract: Study DesignRetrospective evaluation.PurposeTo compare quality of life in postmenopausal women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) who underwent vertebroplasty (VP) or kyphoplasty (KP).Overview of LiteraturePatient with OVFs who do not respond to conservative treatment can be treated with VP or ballon KP for faster pain relief. There are controversies on which procedure is more effective.MethodsFive hundred twenty-eight postmenopausal women in nationwide hospitals with age of 50 years or older who und… Show more

“…Osteoporosis (osteoporosis, OP) is a metabolic bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone tissue mass, bone microstructure destruction, and a decline in bone density and bone quality caused by a variety of factors. The morbidity rate is relatively high in the elderly, which is mainly manifested by chronic pain, restricted activities in some patients, and kyphosis in severe cases, which may even increase the mortality of patients [ 1 , 2 ]. At present, the number of OP patients in China has exceeded 80 million, and its prevalence is about 6.6% of the total population, ranking first in the world, and most of the patients are elderly women over 60 years old [ 3 ].…”

“…Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is a common disease in the elderly population accompanied by decreased bone mineral density [ 1 ], which can cause acute or chronic back pain, functional limitations of the spine, a thoracolumbar vertebral deformity, vertebral height (VH) loss, and deterioration of quality of life [ 2 , 3 ]. OVCFs occur more frequently than other osteoporotic fractures, such as hip fractures and distal radius fractures [ 4 ], and they have become a more increasingly serious disease and a significant health problem worldwide that will obviously increase economic burden to society and family in the future [ 5 ].…”

“…The outcomes described by the Ontario Health Technology [ 11 ] showed that BK to treat pain associated with VCFs due to osteoporosis was as effective as vertebroplasty at relieving pain, and it restores the height of the affected vertebra and results in lower fracture rates in other vertebrae compared with vertebroplasty and in fewer neurological complications due to cement leakage compared with vertebroplasty. These results were experienced by the retrospective study from Lee et al [ 12 ], which reported a significantly better quality of life in the group treated by kyphoplasty than in the group treated by vertebroplasty, especially regarding mobility, pain, anxiety, and depression.…”
