Quality of life during potentially curative treatment for locally advanced oesophageal cancer

Abstract: The negative treatment-related impact of chemoradiation on short-term HRQL is less than that experienced with combination treatment including surgery. Patients preferring early recovery should consider definitive chemoradiation.

“…Several studies evaluated the effects of different treatment modalities (i.e., combined neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery versus surgery alone) on patient-reported dysphagia [1,10,19,23,31] or analyzed the prognostic value of baseline QoL scores for short-term outcome after surgery or survival [11]. The objective of our study was to evaluate whether the subjective estimation of an improvement in dysphagia or eating restrictions after two cycles of induction chemotherapy can predict the histopathological response observed after chemoradiation.…”

“…Our results are in coherence with the studies which have compared the HRQL in esophageal cancer survivors with a reference population by using the EORTC QLQ-C30. Aggravated tribulations like fatigue, diarrhea, appetite loss, nausea and vomiting were observed in patients than in the reference population [14,15] During the present study, Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the survival rates in the patients [1] . It was established in the present study that dysphagia is significantly associated with survival rates in all the three ethnicity groups.…”

“…10 These lead to poor gastrointestinal wellbeing and are also severely detrimental to overall quality of life. 11 The majority (60-80%) of patients who have had an oesophagectomy will have reflux symptoms following the procedure. 8 Many of these will develop a chronic cough and recurrent pneumonia associated with the refluxing acid.…”
